What Is the Jeep Wave?

By Adam Smith

Jeep
Have you ever noticed that Jeep driver's wave at one and other when they pass? It's something most people don't understand. Surely they can't all know one and other! Well, there is such a thing as the 'Jeep Wave', and it is something that all Jeep drivers should be aware of. In fact, it is believed that this wave has been a tradition since around World War II. Read on to discover everything you need to know about it.

So, let's begin by taking a look at the history of the Jeep Wave. It is believed that during the military this wave came about as a way to salute high-ranking officers without exposing them. Many believe that soldiers who returned from the war then continued the wave on as a sign of respect. However, whether this story is the truth or not is still debated.

No matter the origins of the Jeep, the wave is essentially a sign of respect amongst drivers. However, it is a pretty big deal, and there is even a point system in place. If you are a new owner of a Jeep, you will need to be aware of whom you should be waving to and why. There is a pecking order, with drivers with more rugged, older Jeeps receiving more points. So, you can expect a ton of points if you have a vintage Jeep. If you have a newer Jeep, you will need to soup it up if you are to land some major points.

Not only will you find the points system on the web, but you will also note that there are rules that must be adhered to as well. This includes the fact that the tradition of the Jeep Wave must be upheld by all Jeepers. You are required to initiate the wave when you come into contact with a higher scoring Jeep. You must continue the wave until one of the following occurs - the higher scoring vehicle has passed you and is no longer in view, the wave is blatantly disregarded, or the wave is returned. The only scenario whereby you don't need to return the wave is if the vehicle has a score below 0.

However, if you come across a vehicle with a score below, you can still wave at them, and you are encouraged to do so. This is seen as an opportunity to mentor and guide the owner of the Jeep, in an attempt to help them correct the error of their ways. If you are not sure about the status of the Jeep passing you by, or you do not have time to figure it out, you should initiate the wave. It's better to be safe than sorry, and you do not want to run the risk of offending anyone.
